Designing for Trust

Empower ride-share app redesign

Project Overview

Empower is a mission-driven ride-share platform that challenges the traditional gig economy by giving drivers more control over their work.

However, the current product experience does not fully communicate these values. While functional, the interface lacks the clarity, credibility, and warmth needed to build trust and highlight Empower’s unique approach to ride-sharing.

This redesign explores how the platform’s experience can better reflect its mission. Through heuristic evaluation and user testing, I identified opportunities to improve transparency, strengthen trust, and create a more approachable and reliable user experience.

Current gaps in the Empower app experience

A heuristic evaluation of the existing Empower app revealed several usability issues that weaken clarity, efficiency, and user confidence in the platform.

  • Visibility of System Status – The interface does not consistently communicate system activity, leaving users unsure whether actions have been completed or processes are still in progress.

  • Flexibility and Efficiency of Use – The experience relies on rigid interaction flows with few shortcuts or customization options, making it difficult for experienced users to complete tasks quickly.

  • Aesthetic and Minimalist Design – Excess interface elements compete with key information, creating visual clutter and making it harder for users to quickly identify what is most important.

Defining the Problem and Opportunity

To better understand how users experience the Empower app and inform my redesign, I conducted user testing with both returning and new riders.

My findings revealed a broader issue: key parts of the experience lacked clarity, transparency, and intuitive workflows, leading both new and loyal users to feel hesitant or unsure during important steps of the ride-booking process.

I thus focused my redesign on reducing confusion, strengthening transparency around ride details, and simplifying key workflows within the booking experience.

Key Takeaways

These examples represent only a few of the redesign decisions I made to improve clarity, transparency, and user confidence throughout the ride-booking experience. This project reinforced the importance of clear system feedback, reducing visual and informational clutter, and surfacing key details at the moments users need them most.
