Reimagining Sophocles

Visual System for Theatre Campaign

Project Overview

This project reimagines three of Sophocles’ most iconic tragedies—Antigone, Electra, and Oedipus Rex—through a unified visual system designed to bring classical themes into a contemporary context. The goal was to create a campaign that feels dramatic, symbolic, and instantly recognizable across print and digital environments.

Conceptual Direction

Each play contains layers of meaning that shift depending on perspective. To express this, the visual system centers on positive/negative interplay, where silhouettes reveal multiple interpretations depending on how the viewer reads the shape.

This duality became the foundation for the illustrations, typography, and color choices across the series.

  • Type: Typography inspired by classical letterforms but refined for modern clarity

  • Color: Deep, dramatic palettes reminiscent of ancient Greek art, refreshed with contemporary saturation and contrast

  • Composition: Minimal, symbolic layouts that strip the plays to their essential themes

By pairing historical references with modern visual principles, the system feels rooted in antiquity while still resonating with today’s audiences.

Posters

Social Media

For digital use, the posters were optimized for smaller screens without losing their dramatic presence.

Adjustments included:

  • Increased contrast for mobile viewing

  • Slightly tightened type hierarchy

  • Reframed illustrations for stronger square compositions
